Crude Oil Analysis

Creative BioMart Chromatography provides crude oil composition analysis services based on chromatography in accordance with ASTM, ISO and other recognized chemical industry standards and regulatory protocols. The unprocessed petroleum directly extracted from the oil well is crude oil, which is a dark brown or dark green viscous liquid or semi-solid combustible substance composed of various hydrocarbons. Its main component is alkanes and also contains sulfur, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, vanadium and other elements. Factors such as changes in the environment, mixing ratio, and pollution may have an impact on the quality of crude oil. Crude oil analysis can be used to monitor and control the quality of crude oil to help our customers meet the challenges of the global oil market. Our solutions include but are not limited to ion chromatography (IC), ICP-OES, ICP-MS, GC, GC/MS, HPLC, etc.

Classification of Crude Oil

  • American Petroleum Institute Gravity (API). (API gravity increases with increasing temperature, so the standard measurements need to be made at 15°C or 60°F.)

    --- Light crude oil – API > 31.1

    --- Medium crude oil – 22.3 < API < 31.1

    --- Heavy crude oil – 10.0 < API < 22.3

--- Extra Heavy crude oil (Bitumen) – API < 10.0

  • Sulfur Content. (If the crude contains relatively little sulfur then it is called sweet crude oil, because the lower sulfur content gave it a mildly sweet taste. If it contains a large amount of sulfur then it is called sour crude oil, because it smells similar to rotten eggs.)

--- Sweet crude oil – Sweet crude oil has a sulfur volume lower than 0.42%.

--- Sour crude oil – Sour crude oil has a sulfur volume higher than 0.50%.
