Silicon-based columns have tremendous advantages over the previous borosilicate technology and have become the accepted standard more quickly than is characteristic of new equipment in analytical chemistry.
To make the silica capillary more rugged, a polyimide surface coating is used to protect the outer surface. If the polyimide layer is covered by a more fully cured layer before it is fully cured, bubbles or blisters may form when the succeeding layer is heated during curing due to rapid evaporation of the trapped water of imidization, residual solvents and the volatile monomer contaminants. These blisters are tiny regions of extremely thin polyimide that are easily oxidized at the operating temperature of the gas chromatographic column. The bubbles in the column are very vulnerable to physical damage. In addition, with the lump-detection mode of the laser micrometer, even a very small defective of capillary are selected and discarded.
